I stood staring in the mirror wanting to simply admire God’s creation- His beauty shining upon me. When all of a sudden my eyes began to zone in on a scar…and then another scar! Before I knew it, I was analyzing the cellulite that had managed to wrap itself around my legs.
Yikes! What happened to that youthful body I once had?!?
Put it this way, what started out as good, ended with all kinds of distorted thoughts...
“Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2 NLT).”
Though I had good intentions, I allowed my mind to become clouded with all sorts of thoughts that positioned me against an unrealistic standard of beauty.
The beauty myth.
You know that unrealistic, superficial ideal; how many times do we catch ourselves downplaying our beauty in times it fails to adhere to the world’s standards?
How often do we assimilate to the customs of this world? How often do we become trapped in an old pattern of thinking?
Rather than grabbing a hold of how beautifully sculpted I was, I began criticizing God’s workmanship! This is why the Apostle Paul urges us to carefully consider all forms of distorted reasoning.
We are in the world but not of it. Therefore our thoughts, our paradigms, and our worldview has to change!
Have you ever taken a walk to admire the changes in season; the way the leaves change in colour to showcase its vast array of elegance? Or driven somewhere up north, maybe at the cottage. Have you seen how dark it becomes at night, yet how the stars shine ever so brightly? This is all nature- God’s handiwork. And it is the absolute epitome of beauty!
Our curves, our edges, scars and all- similar to nature, we too were handcrafted in Daddy’s hands. God made us from nothing into something. He looked at us, and when He was finished, He stepped back and said “My, you are beautiful”.
We’re not replicates, we’re originals! Originally created by a creative God!
As new creatures, made in the image of a spectacular God, make no mistake- WE ARE THE ABSOLUTE EPITOME OF BEAUTY!
There's no need to compare ourselves to anybody or anything. God created us just as we are- perfectly crafted, uniquely original.
God created you to reflect who He is on the Earth. To criticize God's workmanship, is to criticize His image.
We look like our daddy and we define beauty!
Today, I pray that as women we wouldn't get trapped into an old pattern of thinking reflecting our old nature. Rather, may we spend time daily in the Word of God and in prayer to the Father to renew our minds. May His thoughts become our thoughts and may our mindset become like His, so that we may know that which is good, pleasing and perfect. And that my friend is you and I!
“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother's womb. I thank you, High God—you're breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something (Psalms 139: 13-15 MSG).”
